 The Conversation

Q1 Dharmistha:..What’s the purpose of GOAL SETTING?

Monika:Very good question Dharmistha. If you want to succeed in life..you need to set goals:

Without goals

  • You lack focus and direction
  • Goal setting not only allows you to take control of your life’s direction; it also provides you a benchmark for determining whether you are actually succeeding.

Q2 Dharmistha : What are the points we should consider while goal setting? Also we should set short term goals or long term for business success?

Monika: Important points:

1 Vision should be Crystal clear..that means you know where you want to go

2 Goals should always be set basis on what value or impact or service could be provided to others.

E.g. if my goal is to earn million dollars.

Then is it based on that I’ll purchase car or home etc or I’ll utilize it to serve my clients better.

3 Goals should be made in all spheres of life:

Health

Relationships

Career

Finance

Personal

Giving back to society

4.Also goals should be written with a deadline. Eg I want to earn 1 million dollars by October 2020

5 Goals should be reviewed periodically by taking feedback from others. Many of us are often closed to constructive feedback.

We should be setting both short term as well long term goals. That means we need to know what I desire to achieve in next 1 year and have vision for next 5 years; where I want to reach.

Q3 Gopal: How is vision different from mission and Goal ?

Monika: Vision is the long term objective: say I want to be healthy.

Goal is vision with a deadline: I want to loose 10 kg by October 2018.

It is very specific.

Mission is again short term goal for 1-2 years

Q4 Dharmistha: You mean we set a goal…and then work backwards?

Workout on weekly n monthly breakup towards the path to reach the set-goal…??

Any set format?

Monika: Yes Dharmistha…vision is the driving force for creating goals.

Goals can always be chunked down

Let’s say my goal is to loose 20 kg in 2018.

I chunk it down quarterly day 6kgs approx followed by chunking on monthly basis and then fortnightly

Periodic review is must.

Q5 Nisha: Okkk

But sometimes  we face many obstacles after setting goals also …we work hard but don’t get that response what we expect..than what should be done.. any tips??

Monika: Yes

Failure precedes success.

Periodic review is must.

Take feedback for the action taken. Implement change.

Adopt. .review..and implement till you start getting results

Q6 Darshak: Goal has to be stretched (b.h.a.g.) or it should be realistic??

Monika: All goals depend on you. How early you want to reach to your destination.

I have my one business entrepreneur who wants to do Rs1 Crore Sale / month.

While my other client from FMCG wants to do 5 Crore in a year.

Q7 Darshak: Sorry, not clear…

If I am in hurry to reach but if set so high, it may be difficult to achieve… And one can give up in process.. !!?

Monika: For High goals..your ability to focus your energy and resources should reflect in same manner. You have to plan accordingly. I cannot achieve 5lakh income by spending same time as I was doing in earning 2 lac

Q8 Nisha: After we pen down our goals…it should be read out daily or just think about it regularly??

Q9 Darshak: Have read somewhere , if  Goal statement is pasted every where (in office or in bedroom) or like that.. it helps a lot to remind, and stay focus..

Monika: Yes very true.

You may affirm and visualize your goals too.

Let’s say I am happy and grateful to weigh 56 kg by October 2018. And visualize the effect

Q10 Denver: What are the barriers to achieving goals ?

Monika: Very profound question.

All Barriers our inside of us.

My few clients have mentioned these while taking their sessions:

1 Fear

2 Procrastination

3 Confusion and lack of clarity

4 Lack of persistence

5 Lack of emotional support from spouse

Kaushal: Just apt.

Q11 Vaibhav: Hi Monika.

Sometimes I set goal and fail to achieve it. Next time it gives lots of tension and pressure.

My question is how I should handle such failures.

Monika: Ok..that’s pretty normal.

Please understand

failure precedes success.

After 9 failures..you might get 1 success. Keep preserving thinking each rejection is bringing closer to the goals.

Plus start writing down all small success that you keep achieving..e.g. a successful meeting; any small action taken; getting up early; saying no to unproductive work etc.

Keep on adding these small successes in ur diary n read them before you go to sleep n whenever you feel down or low. Focus only on your earlier successes and see the magic happening

Q12 Preeti: Hey Monica , I’m Preeti  just a simple question what is the basic difference between a goal and dream?

Monika: Dream is just a wish or a desire e.g. I desire a big house.

Goal is a specific with deadline: eg I desire a 1200 sq ft house with swimming pool and library and office by October 2018.

Q13 Sourabh: Interesting topic Monika ji … How to define success??

Monika: Great question Sourabh.

Success is a continuous path..a journey..where you keep fulfilling your objectives and goals and bring out new skills within you..at times..even you are not aware of!!

Q14 Amit: I have a question. Once the goal is set how to keep it alive for yourself?

And how do we maintain progress and not loose focus ?

Monika: Very creative question..loosing momentum and focus while on the path is very common.

For this I suggest few NLP techniques to clients…which I can share on one to one as it needs to be demonstrated.

Plus you may paste your goals pictures with you near your vision..so that you keep focused.

Have an accountability partner n mastermind group to keep you pushing further towards your goals.

Also declare open the goals..if you feel low momentum may be via social media..so that you remain committed n focused and get all support.

Amit: Great answer Monika

Q15 Harsh: How to measure Goal.

Monika:@harsh..measuring goal depends on your vision and actions taken.

Let’s say my personal goal for 2018 was to attend 6 personal development workshops..once in two months approx.

And how can I measure it?

By Feb 28: if I have attended one workshop..then my goal is complete else it is not

Harsh: Thanks Monika for great input on goal setting. I know Monika personally..doing great work in her domain.

Q16 Vivek: As Entrepreneurs, we end up being muddled up in daily fire fighting. We do set Goals and over a period of time deviate. In that sense, success may not come. How to tackle that.

Monika: Ok..thats pretty normal.

Please understand failure precedes success.

After 9 failures..you might get 1 success. Keep preserving thinking each rejection is bringing closer to the goals.

Plus start writing down all small success that you keep achieving..e.g. a successful meeting; any small action taken; getting up early; saying no to unproductive work etc.

Keep on adding these small successes in your diary and read them before you go to sleep n whenever you feel down or low. Focus only on ur earlier successes n see the magic happening.

Vivek: Thanks Monika

Monika: @Vivek Some days I am a A+ mom and B – entrepreneur and B + housewife.

It’s ok..enjoy the process thinking each day you are above your expectation. Trick is to Involve lots of humour while in daily fire fighting.

So when my husband asked me shoulder a new responsibility..I answered him..you are lucky to have a unique n multipurpose wife.

Enjoy these cranky moments. Don’t focus ur energy there.

Q17 Sourabh: I have felt most of the time…we deviate from  goals and think thats not important for me to achieve..is that normal Monika ji??

Monika: Yes..very normal buddy…for same..close your eyes n feel with what energy you at first place decided for the goal..go into that state and again get ur focus back. If you do like this; our day to day problems will be seen like a dot.

Sourabh: Thank you Monika ji
